Who developed Haig Point?

Haig Point, a 1,050-acre member-owned community on Daufuskie Island, was owned and developed by International Paper between 1984 and 2001. Ownership was transferred to the current membership in 2001.

How is Haig Point managed?
The community and amenities are under the direction of a member-elected, nine-person Board of Directors.

What makes Haig Point so unique?

The fact that this is a car-free community with no bridge is certainly a differentiator. A less tangible but equally vital aspect of this community is its culture. Haig Point is not for everyone, but rather those individuals who place a higher value on preservation, character and socialization than automobiles, crowds and malls. No traffic ensures Haig Point’s roadways are truly child, grandchild, and pet-safe.

Other defining points are the private ferry system, efficient valet program, professional facilities, maintenance department, and the presence of 29 holes of Rees Jones golf.

What about grocery shopping?

Members who live at Haig Point will tell you that shopping is not difficult; it’s just different! Our General Store stocks staples and will order special products upon request. Just a 25-minute ferry ride away, Hilton Head offers an abundance of shopping options. However, if the need occurs, most major supermarkets accept telephone requests and will deliver your groceries free of charge to the Embarkation Center. Our valet service takes over from there. Your order will appear on your doorstep before you know it.

Is transportation a problem?

Not at all. Once you have dropped your belongings at the Embarkation Center, parked your automobile within the private, gated parking area and boarded the ferry, your personal golf cart becomes your main mode of transportation. A shuttle service runs hourly between the Clubhouse and the Haig Point reception center.

The ferry system is renowned for its efficient service. If needed, a water taxi can also be taken to shore for a nominal fee. Reservations can be requested at 843.686.2000.

What is the property owner profile?

Our residents are a cross-section of interesting and accomplished members from all over the United States as well as Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, England, Sweden, Poland, India. Their average age is 57 years. Many researched private clubs and communities across the nation before deciding Haig Point was for them.

How many people reside at Haig Point?

Approximately 100 families are fulltime residents, and another 50 spend half the year at Haig Point. There are 250 homes within the community that have been completed or are currently under construction. Members are not required to build within a defined timeframe. When a decision is made to build, the Architectural Review Board must approve designs.

What is the density of Haig Point?

How are building materials transported to the island?

Building materials, major supplies and moving vans are barged to the island from the mainland.

What about the fire department, EMS and other services?

The island has a modern, fully manned fire department, EMS, ambulance and paramedic services and three locations for helicopter landings if medical evacuation is necessary.

What about waste treatment, electricity and other services?

Haig Point has its own waste treatment plant and high-quality water flows from the Floridan Aquifer. South Carolina Electric provides power, while high–speed Internet and telephone operations are delivered via Hargray. All other services, such as cable and satellite TV, are available.

Do members have boat-docking facilities?

Haig Point has a large community dock on the Intracoastal Waterway for interim docking and mooring, while the Freeport Marina, just a short distance from Haig Point, provides dry stack storage.

Is there a beach?

Haig Point has a private Beach Club that overlooks the Calibogue Sound as well as an unspoiled white sand beach that begins at a point adjacent to the 14th green and extends 3.5 miles to the southern tip of Daufuskie Island.

Are there other developments on Daufuskie Island?

Yes, a handful of other developments can be found on Daufuskie Island including Melrose and Bloody Point. Other developments include Oakridge, primarily offering beachfront properties, and the Webb Tract, which, although undeveloped at this time, has been permitted for a full-scale marina with shops and services that will rival Harbour Town. Much of the charm of Daufuskie Island has been preserved in the Historic District where the 100-year-old First Union African Baptist Church is located. The modern schoolhouse provides pre-K through 5th grade teaching facilities and a renovated museum contains many ancient artifacts and treasured memorabilia.

What about the wildlife?

Every effort has been made to protect and enhance the environment. More than 160 species of birds have been identified by the Audubon Society, wood duck boxes border the 75 acres of ponds and lagoons, and osprey nests abound in the towering pines. Whether you prefer fly-fishing or spinning, the lakes are stocked with bass and bream. Plus you’ll never tire of watching the dolphins play as you stroll the sea oats-lined beach road.
